Greetings, all,
My friends just call me “D”, but the forum didn’t like that because it was too short. So, I went with an old nickname - Big D.
I recently heard on TWIL about StillOS and have d/l and installed on Gnome Boxes for testing. The first thing I noticed was that several default applications seemed, let’s say, “off-centered”. For instance, I have set up systems for newbies to Linux and have never installed Blanket, Recordbox, Shortwave, Secrets, Newsflash, Mousam, or Video Player for them. Most of them come from the M$ world and are more comfortable with Rhythmbox, Sound Juicer, VLC, and KeePass instead. None of them wanted (or needed) Shortwave or a weather app.
Kudos, though, for installing Flatseal and DejaDup. Probably a little much for a newbie, the person setting up this system for them would configure both for them as “set & forget” options. Later, when they are a bit more advanced, I’d show them how to change/update for themselves. Re: updates - thank you for building in auto-updates! That’s one less thing I’ll need to worry about.
That brings me to gaming - why oh why is there nothing installed in this category? Not even Steam. I’m sure it probably has to do with this being an early release.
After the install and first boot: hovering the mouse over the Menu, Workspaces, and Updates icons in the (lower left) tray gives no text explaining what they are.
Although LibreOffice, Firefox, Brave, Gimp, Audacity, VLC, and KeyPass are not installed by default, they’re all listed in the Still Store as “Essentials”. These, to me, should be installed right off the bat.
Last negative points: SSH is on! WTH?!?!?! For an OS that that “just works” and is “as consumer ready as possible” (speaking of noobs) this is completely unnecessary. I have yet to meet a newbie that even knew what SSH was, let alone needed it enabled.
Take care and stay safe,
Big D
