Installation and experience

Absolutely freaking fantastic!

As a Bluefin user on 4 machines at home, 2 of them on my wife’s PC and Laptop!, I wanted to test this, specifically for the design goals, which is exactly what I was looking for a long time. Nothing wrong with Bluefin, but StillOS shines specifically on it’s base, which has a very long term support. That even beats Bluefin’s LTS model.

Everything work, except my printer, a Canon PIXMA TS3722, but that was to be expected because I tried Almalinux and couldn’t get it working there either, as it’s the same base.

Other than that, everything works.

I wish the filesystem could be BTRFS instead of EXT4, due to the advanced features it has (BITROT protection, compression, all files checksummed, etc.) but I guess because Almalinux is set up that way, StillOS inherits that.

The GUI customizations are WONDERFUL!, and yes, this system can be set up for a mommas and papas as a set and forget, with the auto updates, so this is fantastic.

So, go go go, Cameron! you’re on the perfect track!!!

Hello, AlmaLinux is preinstalled with XFS and supports BTRFS. XFS isn’t great on a desktop, and BTRFS has always been slower for me, and I have also had BTRFS installs randomly break multiple times. These breaks were recoverable, but I don’t want new Linux users to have to deal with that. That’s why we use EXT4; it’s mostly just extra stability. That said, you should be able to change it in Anaconda.

Thanks so much for the support. Let me know if you have any more feedback. I saw the Tailscale suggestion on Discord.
