Saw article on StillOS on “ITSFOSS”. Downloaded but no “Live” option. Whilst I have space to install, the actually installer is horrible making me unsure if I’m going to wipe out my other OS’s on the PC. There are plenty of more friendly installers out there, especially if this is aimed at an ordinary consumer looking for windows alternative.
I agree with you that this is a problem, but there are currently technical limitations that prevent us from shipping a live ISO or an alternative installer…
We are working on a custom build system that will allow us to make Live ISOs, and we will be switching to this build system for the upcoming “stillOS 10.2.5” polish update that mainly is behind the scenes changes to make stillOS easier to maintain.
Eventually we will port Fedora’s newer Anaconda Web UI to stillOS, the main reason we cannot use it in stillOS 10.2.5 is because stillOS doesn’t preinstall a web browser (you pick a browser first boot), so we have nothing to display the Anaconda Web UI with. Our work around is going to be porting the Anaconda Web UI to run in a SWAI app similar to the current stillOS Forums app built into stillOS. However for the installer to work, we will need to add some new features to the SWAI framework, which means this will take longer. Expect this hopefully for stillOS 10.3 which will land around the time AlmaLinux 10.3 lands.
Even further down the line we want to build our own installer rather than rely on RHEL’s Anaconda.
Cheers!
